First of all , before we got deeply into this topic , we must know what is the meaning of Ihsan . Ihsan is a part of Muslim's creed since the religion of Islam founded upon three terms which are Islam , Iman and Ihsan. This is clearly explain in the Hadith Gabriel , that the Angel Gabriel went to Prophet Muhammad SAW and asked him about the three matters. Ihsan in Islam is the Muslim's responsibility to obtain perfection or excellence in worshipping almighty God. Moreover , Ihsan brought a concept how to do something with beauty. In some situation , some people will asking, " isn't the Ihsan is sympathy , is it the same as sympathy ?".Usually , we will use sympathy for human being but this time Ihsan more to perfection or excellence in doing something ( in order to worship Allah to get reward from him).
For example narrated from hadith Gabriel AS , he asked Prophet Muhammad about Ihsan ,
which means The Prophet (S.A.W) said: “It (Ihsan) is to worship Allah as if you see Him, for though you do not see Him, surely He sees you ”. This hadith clipping sufficiently explains the meaning of Ihsan because when we perform prayers by imagining that God is looking forward to us, we will be able to perform the prayer perfectly without disability.
“Verily, Allah has prescribed Ihsan towards everything. Therefore, when you kill, kill in the best manner. When you slaughter, slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife and give ease to his animal." It is enough to understand the meaning of how to do something with beauty .Why not we do it better with perfection if we can rather than we only do it with a enough terms even if it is legitimate.
There are two manifestation of Ihsan ;
1) Ihsan in Worshipping Allah
Worshipping to Allah by prayer , fasting , pilgrimage correctly by having awareness of Allah's observation of him . The term correctly means fulfilling the conditions , observing the pillars , in conformity with the Sunnah , and with the proper etiquette.
2) Ihsan in Socializing with other creations .
Firstly , Ihsan towards parents , relatives , orphans , the poor and to people in general. It is can be demonstrated through by being kind to them , avoid what they dislike , doing what pleased them and not behaving in a disgraceful them. Secondly , Ihsan towards animals. How this terms Ihsan can apply toward animal , we simply can showing them with kindness like feeding them the foods and playing them gently . The last one is Ihsan towards work . This Ihsan includes being dedicated and professional in one's work doing the as best as they can. Not only they can get profit in this world but also in the hereafter
THE STORY OF THE PROPHET JOSEPH AS
Among all the Prophets , Almighty God attributed Prophet Yusuf AS with the title of Muhsin in five Quranic verse in Surah Yusuf [verse 22 , 36 , 56 , 78 , and 90]
1. Ihsan in obeying Allah SAW - Surah Yusuf (12:22)
“When Joseph attained His full manhood, We gave him power and knowledge: thus do We reward those who do right.” - From Iman ibn Kathir , he commented in this ayah about Allah appointed Prophet Yusuf AS to be his Prophet when Prophet Yusuf was still young .This is the reward from Allah for those obedience him .It is proven when he continuously patience and calm when he should to separate him with his beloved father which is Prophet Jacob AS by the wicked plan from his elder's brothers.
2. Ihsan with other fellow beings - Surah Yusuf (12:36)
- And there entered with him two young men in the prison. One of them said: "Verily, I saw myself (in a dream) pressing wine." The other said: "Verily, I saw myself (in a dream) carrying bread on my head and birds were eating thereof." (They said): "Inform us of the interpretation of this. Verily, we think you are one of the Muhsinin (doers of good)." - This verse tells about the challenges that faced by Prophet Yusuf AS when he was wrongly imprisoned due to the wicked work from Al-Aziz's wife. From Hamka , he commented that there were two prisoners who asked about their dreams to Prophet Yusuf AS .Its is because Prophet Yusuf AS described himself with Muhsin attitude.
3. Ihsan in Working - Surah Yusuf (12:56)
- “Thus did We give full authority to Yusuf (Joseph) in the land, to take possession therein, when or where he likes. We bestow of Our Mercy on whom We will, and We make not to be lost the reward of al-Muhsinin (the good doers).” - This is described about the change of situation of The Prophet Yusuf AS from the prisoner to the second highest position in the government ( Finance Minister of Egypt ) , from the slavery to freedom. In other word , it can be understood that Prophet Yusuf AS practice wisdom , justice , trustworthy and kindness in his work as a finance manager in Egypt. It can be an example for us in working .
4. Ihsan towards Relatives - Surah Yusuf (12:78 and 90 )
- They said: "O ruler of the land! Verily, he has an old father (who will grieve for him); so take one of us in his place. Indeed we think that you are one of the Muhsinin (good-doers).” - One day , the brothers of Prophet Yusuf AS came to Egypt . Prophet Yusuf AS accommodates their need . measure the goods bought with just and being hospitable to them .
- They said: “Art thou indeed Joseph?” He said, “I am Joseph, and this is my brother: Allah has indeed been gracious to us (all): behold, he that is righteous and patient,- never will Allah suffer the reward to be lost, of those who do right.” - This is also connected to story about Prophet Yusuf AS as he is on the highest level of Iman to forgive beyond of his elder brothers wicked plan. He do not take any revenge toward his brothers even though he had a power as a finance minister of Egypt .
All of this examples were the best example of Ihsan . This is proves that Prophet Yusuf AS was someone who consistently practice the quality of Ihsan. As we know , Prophet Yusuf AS faced a lot of challenges in his life , but that did bit change his character as a Muhsin .
